NCAC: combating online piracy and increasing public' awareness is the key

Yesterday, State Council Information Office held a press conference and invited principals of State Intellectual Property Office (SIPO), State Administration for Industry and Commerce (SAIC), and National Copyright Administration (NCAC) to answer questions about Chinese intellectual property (IP) development in 2009.

At the conference, Xu Chao from NCAC replied the question of online piracy. He said, there are several reasons for the online piracy, and one of the most important reasons is the fast development of internet technology with slow countermeasures. This is not only the problem faced by China, but also the one for developed countries and other developing countries, such as Nigeria which is a country of film.

China also has judicial and administrative protection for online copyright. Cases of online infringements that are accepted by courts account for over half of the copyright cases, which indicates that many right owners choose the judicial channel to protect their rights.

Chinese government pays big attention to the Internet order, and since 2005, NCAC has carried out special campaigns annually. It is studying the traits of the Internet and will apply some technical measures in the future. However, the key method is to increase the public's awareness, and this year's campaign on education and propaganda is with the hope that the public could respect knowledge and copyrights.
