China's biotech community captures international attention at Chicago convention |
CHICAGO, May 5 (Xinhua) -- An impressive lineup of increasingly competitive Chinese bio and pharmaceutical companies attracted a lot of attention at the 2010 BIO International Convention in Chicago. Drawing from more than 60 countries and hosting more than 1,700 exhibitors, the world's largest gathering of the global biotech community opened Tuesday at Chicago's McCormick Place, where China emerged as a positive and enduring force in the competitive biotech field. Decked in dramatic, vibrant-red color, the Chinese Pavilion, themed "New Market, New Capital, New Opportunity, New Development, " stood out in the busy, 180,000 square foot show floor, announcing China as a major player in the important biotech and pharmaceutical industry. Welcoming visitors at the Chinese "Gate" of the Beijing booth was Guoshen Cui of the international affairs and investment promotion department at Alliance of Beijing Pharma and Biotech center. He told Xinhua, "This is the first time Beijing organized its own delegation. We are dedicated to promoting Beijing to the whole world as a global innovative city." Discussing China's biotech presence, Cui added, "China has an emerging bio-med and drug market, a strong environmental policy, investment support for innovation from our government and huge developmental potential due to comparative advantages in cost and efficiency." In fact, China's emerging biotech and pharmaceutical industry boasts not only a large market size, but also rapid technological advances. The Chinese biopharmaceutical industry recorded 121 billion U.S. dollars GDP in 2008, a 25.6 percent increase year on year, and its GDP in expected to surpass 147 billion dollars. In addition to networking events, the Bio 2010 Convention offers numerous exhibits in topics ranging from medicine, diagnostics, the environment and agriculture to issues such as patent protection, personalized medicine, climate change biofuels and genetically engineered animals. Weisun Rao, an attorney and counselor at law from Chicago based law firm Miller Canfield, told Xinhua after visiting the show, "It's great. I met a lot of people here. I've seen a lot of interesting companies with very cutting edge technologies which really fascinates me. This year I feel the show is much bigger, and more Chinese companies are here as well." John Zhang is the General Manager of Green Word Public Relations & Consultant Co., Ltd, executor of the China Pavilion. He said, "The Chinese delegation is led by the China National Center for Biotechnology Development and the China Center for Pharmaceutical International Exchange. 2010 BIO is an excellent opportunity for Chinese companies in the industry to exchange with other international companies. We will use our time here to meet with potential partners and hopefully bring new business back to China." Standing right in front of the China Pavilion, Laurence J. Blumberg, MD, Senior Vice President of Business Development at Kadmon Pharmaceuticals, said, "It is the one place that you can go and see everyone in the bio industry in a very short time. It is wonderful to see the progress that the industry has made." In the industry for more than 20 years, including directly working with China, Blumberg was impressed by the tremendous opportunities and accelerating innovations in China, remarking, " The market for bio pharmaceutical products is growing more rapidly here than anywhere else in the world. China will emerge in the next few years as one of the top two markets in the world." Blumberg added, "I have been working with a group in Tianjin which has a very exciting new research and development platform to develop drugs for the Chinese market. We are trying to set up a joint venture over there." Featured speakers at Tuesday's keynote luncheon included former U.S. Presidents Bill Clinton and George W. Bush. Al Gore, former U.S. Vice President, and the world renowned climate change thought leader, delivered a keynote address on Wednesday. Running three days, the 2010 BIO International Convention is expected to draw between 15,000 and 17,000 industry leaders and will feature a program with more than 125 sessions in 17 tracks.
