EU-China training on European IP Law

From 15-17 October 2010, the China Europe School of Law (CESL) is hosting a training course at Shanghai on European Intellectual Property Law for lawyers and other legal professionals in the Madrid Pavilion at the Shanghai World Expo 2010. For a second year, the three-day training will provide an overview of European IP law, its protection and enforcement in Europe, aiming to improve the knowledge of Chinese professionals involved in legal and business transactions with Europe. Registration is now open.

Training topics include:

-- An Introduction to EU Law and European Law as a framework for IP protection in Europe
-- Sources and Instruments of European Union Law
-- Remedies and Enforcement of European Union Law

Professor Danièle Alexandre (University of Strasbourg) and Dr. Andrea Wechsler (Max Planck Institute for Intellectual Property, Competition and Tax Law) will conduct the training course together with international IP experts who will address in further detail various IP rights and IP-related issues including European Trademark Law (Community Trade Mark); European Patent Law, obtaining patent rights in Europe, patentability and non-patentability of inventions, novelty and inventive step, opposition and appeal; Industrial Property and technology transfer contracts; custom measures in the EU; IP protection on European trade fairs and alternative dispute settlement and mediation in Europe.

CESL aims to offer high-level legal education to law students and legal professionals, to conduct Sino-European legal research and consultancy activities and to substantially contribute to the advancement of the rule of law in China. It was set up in September 2008 as an initiative of the European Commission and the Ministry of Education in China and is established within the China University of Political Science and Law (CUPL). It operates as a consortium among 16 European and Chinese Institutes of Higher Education, led by the University of Hamburg (UHH).

IPR2 has co-operated previously with CESL as part of its long-term training in China on IP law towards a comprehensive education in IP and related fields, to achieve a strong understanding among Chinese decision-makers, experts, industry and right holders on the importance and function of IP.
