Deputy Commissioner of SIPO led a delegation to Canada

Gan Shaoning, Deputy Commissioner of the State Intellectual Property Office (SIPO), headed a delegation to Canadian Intellectual Property Office (CIPO) and had a talk with Sylvain Laporte, General Director of CIPO. Both parties had an adequate discussion on interested subjects, such as the Traditional Chinese Medicine Patent Database (TCMPD) and examination backlog.

Mr. Gan introduced the structure of China's central and local IP administration, the implementation of Chinese IP strategy, the operation of the special campaign against IPR infringement and counterfeiting, as well as the TCMPD. "China as a developing country is undergoing a rapid development in IP, but with increasing matters arising;" said Mr. Gan, "while Canada, as a developed country, has a lot of useful experience in IP practice we can learn from. SIPO expects to further strengthen communication and cooperation with CIPO."

Laporte shared the information with Chinese delegation about the latest trends in CIPO, the resolution of examination backlog through Patent Prosecution Highway(PPH), as well as the operation of Group Cooperation in Vancouver. "China is one of Canada' important trading partners. Both IP applications of Chinese enterprises in Canada and that of Canadian enterprises in China are maintaining steady growth. It is necessary for both parties to further strengthen communication so as to push forward cooperation in IP and even in economy and trade," he said.

In addition, both sides exchanged experience in plan formulation and budget execution.[
