China's first national meeting on patent application and examination kicks off in Beijing |

China Patent Application and Examination Working Conference, also the first national meeting of that kind, was held in Beijing on December 17. Deputy Commissioner of the State Intellectual Property Office (SIPO) Yang Tiejun attended and addressed the meeting. As basic components of patenting procedures, application and examination are crucial to the implementation of IP strategy, said Yang. “Therefore, we must value the fundamental importance of patent application and examination from an overall strategic perspective,”he said. He also stressed on the necessity to raise awareness, improve patent quality and strengthen coordination, noting the inseparability between patent application/examination and the nationwide IP undertakings. During the meeting, officials from competent divisions of SIPO and local offices had comprehensive discussions around capacity building of patent agencies, circuit examination, prioritized review, promotion of e-filing, patent prosecution highway programs, among others. It was reported that the meeting was organized by examination administration division of the patent bureau under SIPO, with a view to summarizing valuable experience in patent application and examination and meanwhile enhancing the driving force of patenting activities to economic growth and structural adjustment. More than 100 people from IP offices at all levels as well as businesses and intermediary agencies joined the meeting. China has made significant progress in patent application and examination these years. In the first 11 months of 2012, SIPO has accepted 562 thousand patent filings for invention, up 24.2%, in which, those submitted by domestic applicants were 456 thousand (81% of the total), up 28.9%; 324 thousand patent filings for invention have been properly handled at the same time |
