SIPO to protect IPR in specialized markets

Recently, the State Intellectual Property Office released a Notice on Protecting Intellectual Property Rights in Specialized Markets. Given that specialized markets are where most commodities are distributed, effective IPR protection in those markets could help crack down upon counterfeit and shoddy products and strengthen the supervision over micro, small and medium-sized enterprises’ IP status, said an official from the Office.

Pursuant to a one-year protection program stipulated in the Notice, the SIPO will commission local agencies to investigate where specialized markets locate and to what extent IPR are protected in those markets. The agencies are required to reinforce the coordination with IP-related authorities including administrations for industry and commerce, copyright bureaus, public security organs and the Customs to further enhance IPR protection.

Agencies being commissioned will select three to four large specialized markets as pilot objects and will periodically conduct IP enforcement activities in those markets. Sound mechanisms on clue collecting and complaint receiving will be established and the protection progress will be announced to the public in time. Moreover, industry associations will be encouraged to help those markets settle IP disputes by mediation.
