Guangxi: online copyright disputes become the mainstream of IPR cases

It is learnt from Intellectual Property Office of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, IPR cases in Guangxi increased steadily in recent years and online copyright disputes take a large share.

According to the Office, with the construction of Sino-ASEN Free Trade Area, IPR cases in Guangxi have increased year by year. Last year, IPR civil cases heard and solved by courts of first instance in Guangxi were 567 pieces with a settlement rate of 97%, while there were only 189 IPR civil cases for 2008.

Vice presiding judge of No. 3 civil court of Guangxi Higher People's Court Zhou Mian introduced that, the IPR cases mainly focus on copyright, patent, trademark and unfair competition, and there are also new type of cases involving domain name, online music download, films and folklores. And online copyright infringements are increasing with a highest growth rate, which is a new phenomenon and new problem faced by the civil courts in recent years.

From January 2008 to February 2010, courts across Guangxi accepted 670 copyright infringement cases of first instance, accounting for 64% of the total first instant cases, among which 50 cases for 2008 and 374 for 2009.
